Sports audit of the Landessportverband (land sports federation, LSV)
Three ADAC local clubs received certification of the first stage
Environment protection and motor sport are not mutually exclusive

Three local clubs of ADAC Schleswig-Holstein have already cleared the first hurdle to fulfill the standards of the European environmental guideline EMAS (Environmental Management and Audit Scheme). On Thursday (10th of September) the certificates for the sports audit in 2009 were handed over by Wolfgang Beer, vice president of the LSV. The sports audit Schleswig-Holstein is a joint project of the LSV Schleswig-Holstein with its professional asso-ciations and Schleswig-Holstein’s Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. The sports audit is made up of four steps, leads to the validation according to EU act 761/2001 (EMAS) and is especially dedicated to such sports clubs which perform their sport in consid-eration of environment protection. The AC Nordfriesland, the MSF Idstedt (co-organizer of the ADAC Wikinger Rallye) and the MSC Nordmark Kiel offer their members the opportunity to pursue motor sport – from motocross to a rally on public roads. As part of the audit, all three clubs focused on different emphases to make sure that the certification process for step 1 will add possible environmentally hazardous aspects to the check list, that have not yet been into account.
“Motorsport and environment protection are not mutually excluded”, said ADAC sports di-rector Thorsten Johne, who is also the president of the Deutsche Motorsport-Bund (German motorsport association, DMSB). “For many years our sporter are also involved in the envi-ronment protection – three clubs have now volunteered to test this commitment through its paces.” The requirements were high: nature, soil and environment protection, waste, water, emissions, hazardous substance management, behaviour in emergencies and first aid were first inspected for their respective standard. In a second step, the LSV team led by the envi-ronment auditor Dr. Christine Salzbrenner (company ökument) made suggestions of im-provement that were based on a check list. By receiving the certification for the first step of the sports audit Schleswig-Holstein, the three clubs jointly cleared a hurdle and proved that in pursuit of their sport they will put even more focus on compliance and prevention of ir-regularities in the environmental field in the future. This pleased even LSV vice Beer: “Sport makes sense only in an intact environment. Therefore, it is quite natural that the clubs are committed to environmental protection. All the better that the AC Nordfriesland, the Idstedt and the MSC Nordmark Kiel now have it in black and white.” For Thorsten Johne, at any case, the certification is only the beginning of a process: “I am sure that henceforth more ADAC local clubs, which offer motorsport activities, will partake in the audit”, said the ADAC sports leader.
